The divorce rate throughout the world has steadily increased as the population has increased. It appears that the sanctity of marriage is no longer an issue for the general population and many feel that it is an inevitable occurrence. In past generations, the majority of marriages remained intact. Couples stayed together regardless of the conditions that they had to contend with in the marriage.
One might ask, what does the Bible say regarding divorce? The answer to that question is abundantly clear in the scriptures. The Bible clearly states in Genesis that once married a couple becomes “one flesh” and when the marriage vows are repeated, the words “until death do us part” clearly means that marriage is a lifelong commitment.
Under biblical law there are, however, certain conditions under which a couple may divorce. One of those conditions is stated in the book of Matthew, saying that fornication is one condition wherein a Christian can divorce a spouse. Fornication is considered a sin and therefore condemned by God’s word, and the Christian is allowed to remarry.
Another instance in which a Christian may divorce is in the case of a Christian being married to an unbelieving spouse. The book of Corinthians says “Let the unbeliever depart”. In this case, the Christian is free to remarry. The Bible states in the book of John that Christians have a merciful God, and if one commits adultery and confesses that sin and is truly repentant, the Christian is promised forgiveness.
We live in a society where divorce is nearly as common as marriage and many people divorce, stating “irreconcilable differences” as the reason. For the true Christian, divorce is just not that simple.
