Even though the election is over, the debate over whether Barack Obama is a Christian has not been put to rest. Some people say he is not a Christian because he is not pro life. Others say he is being Christ-like in how he helps those in need and that makes him a Christian. It’s a question which can only be answered in President Obama’s own heart. That doesn’t mean we can’t get some idea of his view on Christianity by what he has said.
First of all, we need to define the term Christianity. Many people in our culture consider themselves to be a Christian by default. They believe God exists and they know they are not Muslim, Hindu, Jewish or anything else, so they must be a Christian. This is what some refer to as Cultural Christianity. True Christianity is made up of only the people who accept Jesus Christ’s teaching completely. This simply means they believe what Christ said about himself is true. Christ said he is God’s one and only son and the only way to heaven is through the belief that he died for our sins.
Barack Obama’s view of Christianity must be based on whether he aspires to True Christianity, Cultural Christianity or neither one. Barack Obama has stated he is rooted in the Christian tradition and that he considers himself to be a Christian. He then goes on to say he believes there are many paths to the same place, meaning heaven of course. He also states all who believe in a higher power are somehow connected.
So, is Barack Obama a Christian? He claims to be one, so we must take him at his word.
