Christian Views on Cremation

Death entered into this world by sin. God created Adam and Eve, so he might have fellowship with his creation. But after being deceived, Eve ate of the forbidden fruit and enticed Adam to partake of the fruit. Sin entered the world and as a result death entered in. With this came the act of disposing of the body.

In the Old Testament all believers were buried in tombs or burial caves. The most important burial of this kind for the Christian was the burial of Jesus. His body was placed in a tomb and special spices, aloe and myrrh were used in the preparation of the body. Another example of biblical burial was the burial of Moses by God, according to the end of Deuteronomy. God buried Moses in Moab, but no one knew where.

In the Bible both the Old Testament and the New Testament gave examples of Jewish and Christian burials. The burning of the human body was because of sin and was reserved for criminals and enemies and certain objects that were idols. Old Testament examples clearly favor burial of the body.

Cremation was considered a pagan act and frowned upon by believers. The modern day Christian is more acceptable of cremation. About 25% of Americans request this type of disposal of the body. However, the Bible does not give permission for this practice specifically. We do know that God prefers traditional practices of burying the body because of the examples given to us throughout the Bible.
