Premarital sex is a hot topic in the Christian community. What does the Bible have to say about this subject? Quite a lot, actually. From 1 Corinthians 7: 2, “Each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.” this passage is the same for both Catholics and other Christian denominations. The Old Testament teaches with several passages over the first three books that sexual activity outside of marriage is a sin. The Book of Leviticus, Chapter 18, gives a very clear definition of who a person is to have sexual relationships with. The moral law is unmistakable about one man and one woman in a relationship of marital sex only.
A nondenominational program called “The Silver Ring Thing” promotes chastity and sexual abstinence. This program is held in several countries worldwide and offers teenagers a Christ-centered motivational, educational support system that teaches the emotional and physical negative impact that premarital sex has on a person.
The Roman Catholic Church is very firm on its teaching that sex is primarily for reproduction. God tells us to go forth and multiply. Sex outside of the marriage bed is a mortal sin, separating you from the grace of God; only confession can restore your grace.
They may have different minor differences on this issue, but Protestants and Catholics both agree that sex outside of marriage is a sin. They believe that teaching abstinence will reverse the increased number of abortions, sexually transmitted diseases, and unwed pregnancies, especially among our teenage children. The moral and physical repercussions that threaten our children can be prevented with the proper teachings of morality.
