Once upon a time having sex outside the confines of marriage was something that was unheard of. Women who engaged in this type of behavior were considered “harlots” and not marriage material. However, in this day and age where people are not only having sex outside of marriage, but as teenagers, many wonder what has happened to the Christians principles or the Catholic teachings. Both Catholics and Christians believe that pre-martial sex is wrong and should not happen. Both feel strongly that that the number of unwed teen mothers is high and that strict teaching starting in homes should be used to combat this behavior.
The Catholic Church speaks of sex outside of marriage as being terribly irresponsible. It compares it to drunk driving and certainly believes pre-martial sex is much worse than smoking. Their belief is that “whatever effort we put into combating those bad practices should be matched multiple times in trying to convince people the premarital sex is wrong.”
The Catholic Church, as well as the Christian faith, believe that there is an entire generation of young people who are turning to their culture and peers and are receiving confirmation that sex before marriage with multiple partners is perfectly acceptable. They believe that young people need to hear and come to understand the Christian view that sex belongs within the confines of marriage. Marriage was designed to create powerful bonds between spouses, bonds that enable them to forge the intimate relationship essential to their growth and for the well being of their children. They need to learn that sexual intercourse is not simply a pleasure to be pursued without reverence for the purposes of sexuality.
