Divorce is such a common thing today that it makes one wonder why people even bother to get married. It would be a lot cheaper in the end. The Christian belief is that one should have one wife for life.
That being said how do churches handle all of the divorces in their congregations? Most congregations accept it as a mistake or a "sin." Then if the divorced person remarries the church does not judge them. Christians are supposed to leave judgment to God and not criticize others, remembering that they too will be judged.
The attitudes toward divorce differ depending on the sect of Christianity. For instance, Catholics believe that if one is not married in a catholic church they can divorce and not have any sin against them.
Christian churches believe that in the case of adultery it is not wrong to get a divorce. They also believe that if one is unequally yoked, (married to a nonbeliever or one of a different belief) and the nonbeliever does not change then it is just cause for a divorce. Most churches today do not condone abusive marriages either. They feel that God would not want one to be put through that kind of treatment. After all, He is a God of love.
The attitude of some congregations toward divorce may change in the future as it becomes increasingly prevalent in society. One has to remember that back in Biblical times, things were a whole lot different.
